Victoria Widdows : Governor Chair

Victoria Widdows

Governor Chair

I have been a governor at Haseltine for over 10 years, and Chair of Governors for the last few years.  I have a background in education having worked for the Department of Education in the areas of statistics and communications.  I am a National Leader of Governance, supporting other Governing Bodies to improve.  I am married with two school aged children, and I am a church administrator.

Richard Newsome : Governor

Richard Newsome

Having taught at Fairlawn for four years, and now working at Haseltine, I feel incredibly lucky to come to school each day to work with enthusiastic and positive learners. At Haseltine, I lead English and our Pupil Parliament, working closely with the Pupil Parliament at Fairlawn. Having previously been a member of the Fairlawn Governing Body for two years, and contributed to the working party on our hard federation, I am equally committed to ensuring excellent social and academic progress for children at both Haseltine and at Fairlawn.

I have a particular interest in developing language skills and pupil voice in our school communities. Through my roles as a member of the Teaching and Learning Committee and being the link governor for the Teaching School, I aim to improve the already outstanding work we do to enhance our children’s life chances.

I have been a governor of schools in Southwark and Lewisham for the past five years. I have experience of working with schools with both formal and informal federation arrangements. I have chaired subcommittees in finance, resources and standards. I have worked in several management roles in science and health policy and communications after completing my doctorate research in biochemistry. I live in Lewisham with my young family.

I have been a parent at Fairlawn for eight years and a governor for five. I’m currently vice-chair of the Governing Body, a member of the Teaching and Learning and Resources Committees as well as communications and community engagement link governor. By profession I am a freelance writer and editor, working in the fields of education and social affairs.

I am a qualified Nursery Officer with 35 years experience in the field.  I have worked for the Local Authority in various positions.  During that time I also opened an after school programme for disadvantaged children in the borough. The program offered support to children who needed extra tuition with maths and English.  I am in the process of setting up a Youth Club.

I have been a Governor at Haseltine School for four years.  I have a daughter in year five at the school.

My hobbies involve reading, visiting museums, cinema and theatre.

Maria Knight

Governor - Co-opted

I am a Co-Opted Governor of The Fairlawn and Haseltine Primary Schools Federation. I am the Link Governor for Numeracy and Governor Training and a representative on the Resources and Pay Committee’s. Prior to being appointed into this role in September 2015, I have served on the Haseltine Primary School Governing Body since July 2009 and Fairlawn Primary School Governing Body since November 2012. Over this time, I have obtained governance experience in chairing, finance management, handling appeals and staff recruitment.

My employment experience is in management consulting & strategy across the capital markets industry  (actuarial consulting, investment banking and asset management). My interests as a governor lie in helping ensure decisions align to strategic intent and that resources are allocated with short, immediate and long-term priorities in view for the schools.

I attend regular governor training and recently partook in 'Working with Parents and your Community' and 'Established Governor Refresher'.

I am very pleased to have joined the governing body this year. I am an employment and litigation lawyer by trade and I hope to be able to make full use of my skills and experience in support of Fairlawn and Haseltine. I am part of the Teaching and Learning and Pay committees.

I have two children who attend Fairlawn (one in year one and one in nursery). As a working parent, I have found the support offered by the breakfast and after school clubs to be invaluable. As the link governor for the After School and Breakfast Clubs, I hope to see them continue to flourish.

Justin Needle : Governor

I’m dad of Anton (Fairlawn, 4GL) and have been a parent governor since 2014. I'm also link governor for e-learning and ICT, and a member of the Teaching and Learning Committee. My day job is as a teacher in higher education at City University London, and I aim to use my skills and experience to help our outstanding schools (in every sense) become even more fantastic environments for all of our children. I’m also involved in school life in other ways, for instance, I’ve been the Fairlawn quizmaster for the last three years and help organise these very successful fundraising events.

I am committed to working with staff, parents and the local community to ensure that every child has the opportunity to achieve the highest possible attainment.

My background is in art and I have worked for a large architectural practice as a model maker for the last 17 years. I really love being creative and enjoy exchanging skills and ideas with kids and adults alike. In my 'spare' time I like to run and I probably spend far too much time on social media. I am a mum of two and my eldest is currently in Year 1 at Haseltine.

Rachel Whitely : Governor

I have been a class teacher at Fairlawn since 2011 and am currently the Key Stage 1 Phase Leader and a Year 2 class teacher. As the staff governor, I look forward to being part of both school communities. The pupils across both schools have such an enthusiasm and passion for learning, which I am thoroughly excited to find out more about among the staff, pupils and parents.
