Fairlawn Governors

Rachel Sieffert : Literacy Link Governor

Rachel Sieffert

Literacy Link Governor

Having worked with the staff and children at Haseltine as their Writer in Residence since 2013, I was very pleased to join the board as Literacy Link Governor late in 2016. In my day job as a working writer, I have published four novels and a collection of short stories, and am a regular contributor to newspapers and journals; I have also taught creative writing at tertiary level, at Goldsmiths College and the University of Glasgow, amongst others. However, in recent years, most of my teaching work has been in schools – at Haseltine, and now working with First Story both as a Writer in Residence and to develop and deliver their CPD workshops for secondary school teachers. When taught effectively, writing classes can have a hugely positive impact on children’s learning across the curriculum, enhancing pupils’ capacities both to comprehend and articulate ideas in written and spoken form, and enabling them to be flexible and confident communicators. Operating both at Governing Board level, and on the Teaching for Learning sub-committee, my role as Literacy Link Governor is to support and monitor the teaching of English across the Federation, to ensure it enhances our children’s life chances and their experience of learning in general.

I became a governor in the Summer of 2017 because I am keen to support a school in my local community. I live in Lewisham and have three boys across the primary age range. Professionally, I have been in the Education Sector for 15 years and have had a number of different roles in Primary Education. I am currently the Head teacher of a large primary academy in a neighbouring London borough so know first-hand that Governors play an important role in the school, exercising their powers and responsibilities in partnership with school leadership and staff. Although they are not involved in the day-to-day management of the school, they play a large role in planning for the school’s future at a strategic level. Governors act as a critical friend to the school, offering support and advice; ensuring the school improvement agenda is high and heading in the right direction. The Fairlawn and Haseltine Federation has a strong and active team of governors who bring a range of skills and expertise that is valuable in making the two schools such great places to educate your children.

I have been a staff governor for nearly two years; serving at Haseltine beforehand and now on the new Federation Governing Body since September. I have worked at both Haseltine & Fairlawn schools and have had three children that have been educated at Fairlawn; this has given me knowledge and understanding of both Schools and their ethos. At the present time I work at Haseltine as a cover supervisor and I am the art subject leader.

I attend regular governor training and recently partook in 'Working with Parents and your Community' and 'Established Governor Refresher'.

I am very pleased to have joined the governing body this year. I am an employment and litigation lawyer by trade and I hope to be able to make full use of my skills and experience in support of Fairlawn and Haseltine. I am part of the Teaching and Learning and Pay committees.

I have two children who attend Fairlawn (one in year one and one in nursery). As a working parent, I have found the support offered by the breakfast and after school clubs to be invaluable. As the link governor for the After School and Breakfast Clubs, I hope to see them continue to flourish.
